What’s in a name?

Those who know me well, know that I tend to overthink things at times (and yes, I consider that both a strength and an, umm, opportunity) :), but back in 2011, when I 1st began considering this career change, I did spend some time thinking about a company name.

I didn’t want to use my own name, both the risk of mispronunciation and/or people scared to call me because the name was intimidating. I wanted something a bit more creative that would stand out from the pack. Also, I didn’t want to use only the term ‘Consulting”, as it can be so vague in what the company offers. I knew I wanted to have a focus on data analysis and KPI’s, as I felt those were amongst my ‘bread and butter’ strengths.

Whew, so what did that leave me with?

My throw away list….

DMR Consulting (was already used, a large firm in the 90’s), Blue Danube (fan of the color and the region, not to mention a specific car color), I had a couple of notions with other colors, other favorites (animals, sports, cars, computers) but nothing struck me.

I began focusing on the data component, and more and more the ‘Data Mining’ phrase (which was just beginning to become popular) felt like something I could really explore and offer expertise in. It didn’t take long afterwards, thinking about other names, and eventually, my family’s names, where the acronym JEWAL (and yes, it is misspelled on purpose, for my daughter) was born. Not only representing the investments we all will make, but also the very obvious tie-in between JEWAL and Mining. I finally had my company name.

Funny enough, initially I did have the company as JEWAL Data Mining & Consulting in 2011, but after some very valid feedback, I reversed the order of the descriptors to what I now have.

There you have it. A story almost 10 years in the making. I think both the company profile and image and my own development has grown and matured a lot in the last 10 years.
